If you’ve decided to transfer your 401(k) plan to another provider or terminate your plan, here’s what you can expect regarding your final billings.
Transferring plans
The final billing month is the month in which the plan assets are sent to the new provider. Since your plan is billed the month after service was provided (billed in “arrears”), your final invoice will be sent in the month following the final billing month. For example, if the transfer takes place in February, your last invoice will be sent in March for February’s fees.
Terminating plans
For terminating plans, billing continues for the 3 months from either the termination date or date of submission, whichever is later. However, billing will not continue past the month all participant accounts are fully distributed, also known as the service end date.”
Here are several examples of how this works:
Example 1
A plan provides their termination packet on August 22 with a termination date of December 1, and plan assets are fully distributed in March.
Termination Date (December 1); Submission Date (August 22); Service End Date (March 31)
Normal billing through the month of termination (September - December)
Billing for the 3 months following termination (January - March)
Final invoice will be issued in April for the March fee
Example 2
A plan provides their termination packet on March 31 with a termination date of the prior January 31. The plan fully distributes all assets in May.
Termination Date (January 31); Submission Date (March 31); Service End Date (May 30)
Normal billing through the month in which the packet was submitted (January - March)
Billing for the 2 months following submission (April - May) - limited to 2 months since plan was fully distributed within those 2 months
Final invoice will be issued in June for the May fee
