Why are there no 401(k) deductions in my first January paycheck?

If you received your first paycheck of the new year and there are no deductions for your 401(k) contributions it is likely due to the following factors:

  1. You maxed out your annual contribution limit in the prior year. When this happens, Guideline or your payroll provider may temporarily adjust your contribution rate to 0% to help you avoid overcontributing, and

  2. Your employer ran your January payroll in December while you were still maxed out, causing no deductions to be counted toward your first paycheck in the new year.

If you’d like to make up for missed contributions, you can adjust your contribution rate in your Guideline dashboard at any time.
